Nutella and the Environment

Recently the French ecology minister posted an advisory asking people to stop using the popular hazelnut and chocolate spread as reported by Grub Street a New York Magazine blog site about the food and restaurant business.(http://www.grubstreet.com/2015/06/nutella-environment.html).

The root of the issue is one of the main ingredients in the spread is palm oil. Palm oil has been a cause for concern among environmentalist for several years. The biggest problem is that the increasing demand for the cooking oil has greatly increased the rate of deforestation, which destroys habitat for wildlife and flora and reduces the number of trees to take carbon dioxide out of the air leading to climate change. However, some environmental groups like Greenpeace are okay with the way the product is manufactured (http://time.com/3926118/greenpeace-nutella/).

The manufacturers of Nutella have replied by stating that they are working on a plan to sustainably source palm oil and have a “time bound agreement” with individual growers. Alexei Beltyukov hopes they figure out something soon. Nutella has had a lengthy history of largely ignoring the palm oil controversy. Nutella is a spread made largely from hazelnuts with a hint of cocoa. Palm oil makes up to 20% of the product.
